When I went through my separation, I had a lot of concerns about how I was going to make ends meet. So many things were changing and finances felt like one more thing I had to deal with. Spending more than I had was no longer an option. Our lifestyle needed to change so one night, my kids and I sat down and used Monopoly money to map out all our expenses. I hoped that they would see that money was tight. From this activity, the kids saw we had the money for Netflix and an occasional Chick-fil-A meal, and they were thrilled! Getting the kids involved was super helpful and helped with the “mom guilt” I was struggling with. During this time, I also picked up a contract job (working from home) to help pay for any extras that might come up. The extra income was especially helpful when our lawnmower died.
What do you need to do now to get your finances in order? Is there someone in your life you can hold you accountable and help you? A close friend, mentor or even your church. Don't wait. Take a step now.
